NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Old Dominion senior first baseman Joey Burney spends a great deal of his time watching video of himself and others hitting. He’s looking for any edge he can get. “Apparently it helps, the more you see yourself. It’s easy to say what’s wrong, you know, what feels wrong or right when you’re in there, but when you see yourself, it’s a completely different perspective and you honestly need that,” said Burney.
It worked this weekend. The Gloucester native hit a double and three home runs along with 10 runs batted in leading the Monarchs to their first ever series win in Conference USA. For his efforts, Burney was named the conference hitter of the week. “It’s a huge accomplishment. I have never been recognized like that before. It doesn’t mean everything. That two out of three was huge.”
There is only one way to describe Burney’s play this past weekend. He was in the zone. “It was like he was pitching from second base. It seemed like I knew what he was going to throw. Everything he threw was huge,” said Burney.
This being his senior year, Burney is trying to make the most of his time left playing as a Monarch. “This season means everything to me. It has always been my plan to keep playing baseball as long as possible. This is the closest team I have ever been on and I have grown up with my teammates,” said Burney.
