Norfolk State in search of QB at spring practice

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)- Spirits are high as spring football is underway at Norfolk State. Spartans head coach Pete Adrian says spring practice can help players move up the depth chart. “It’s all about competition. If guys want to move up the depth chart or stay where they are at then they have to get after it. So we go pretty hard the first 9 days and then I back off to keep players from getting hurt,” said Adrian.

Like all Division 1 programs, the Spartans get 15 valuable practices. Offensive line coach Rod Holder says these practices are invaluable. “Their huge. Back in the day you used to get 20 practices and they were fully padded. Now you only get 15 with 12 practices fully padded for safety precautions. So yes they are really important.”

The top goal for the Spartans this spring is to declare a starting quarterback. “We are going to try to end it now. All of these guys have experience when the shooting is live and there was some good competition there, so I think its important that we come out with a starter,” said Adrian.

The Spartans used three signal callers on last years 3 win season with Chesapeake’s Tyler Clark getting the most snaps.

With the emphasis on offense this spring, Norfolk State hired two new assistant coaches. Former Morgan State head coach Donald Hill-Eley will serve as offensive coordinator.  Gordon Gregory has over 30 years college coaching experience and will oversee the quarterbacks. “This spring is critical that we get terminology down but more important, we need to find our quarterback and our leader, because we are coming off a terrible season last year and we need to know who are quarterback is if we are going to have a good season,” said Gregory.

The Spartans look good on defense with 9 returning starters from last years team.
