NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Close to 2,500 showed up to SB Ballard Stadium on the campus of Old Dominion University for the school’s annual Big Blue 5k and Big Blue Barbecue.
Those who chose to run the 5-kilometer course, set up to go through parts of ODU and around others, were welcomed at the finish line by cold beverages, live music, and of course, more barbecue than can be consumed in one day.
“It’s a recipe for success,” said ODU Athletics Director Wood Selig, who couldn’t have picked a better day if he could control the skies above. Runners and spectators enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures all afternoon, while also celebrating the season that was and one still to come.
The ODU athletics department honored the men’s basketball team, who went from just a 5-win team over the 2012-2013 season to one that finished .500 at 18-18 overall and with a winning record in Conference USA this past year.
“Last year, this was my first kind of public event being the new head coach here, and everybody told me about the (Big Blue Barbecue) and it’s a lot of fun,” said head coach Jeff Jones, who also enjoyed watching some of his players dance with members of the crowd.
“I mean, it’s great to always have this,” said ODU forward Richard Ross, who was named the team’s Most Valauable Player, “It doesn’t matter what kind of mood you’re in. There’s no way you could come out here with all these great fans and not enjoy yourself.”
After congratulating the basketball team, the fans filed into SB Ballard Stadium to watch the annual ODU Spring football game.
