King’s Fork grad displays NBA potential

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – If a recent trend continues, King’s Fork High School graduate Devante Gardner could find himself on an NBA roster real soon.

The Marquette University senior was named Most Valuable Player of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament on Saturday after scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The last three MVP’s of the tournament all went on to play in the NBA, including Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler.

“(Devante Gardner) was a 6-guy coming off the bench, and he’s done everything he’s supposed to do to open the eyes of the scouts,” said Ryan Blake, the NBA’s senior director for scouting operations,

“He’s made himself more money, more opportunities here by being that guy; the rebounder, the screen-setter, everything there.”

Gardner averaged over 16 points and five rebounds through three PIT games, and showed he can score in the paint or from the free throw line.
